Mad for Plaid

What is Mad for Plaid?
Mad for Plaid is the annual, joint fundraising effort of the PTA and Highland Park Education Foundation.  It is the only District-wide fundraiser benefiting every child in every school in HPISD. 

Why is it necessary?
This year, because of Robin Hood, HPISD will pass the BILLION dollar mark in funds leaving our community to fund others across Texas.   Robin Hood is the state law requiring property-wealthy school districts to send a portion of their locally collected tax dollars to Austin to be redistributed state-wide.  In addition, new legislation passed this summer has cut education dollars significantly.  The Highland Park schools are not immune to these new cuts and will face an ever-increasing challenge to fund quality education for its children.

Mad for Plaid has formed a strong public–private partnership with the community over the years.  Gifted dollars now make up about 5% of the HPISD budget and are a large factor in maintaining the District’s excellent educational program.  While other districts are already implementing cuts in programs and staff layoffs, HPISD is not taking anything away from our students thanks to the generous contributions of our parents, grandparents, alumni, neighbors and friends.
